Preparing Your Pet for Fireworks: Tips to Reduce Anxiety

The Fourth of July may be a time of celebration for humans, but for many pets, it’s a night of stress and fear. The loud bangs and flashes can be overwhelming, especially for dogs and cats. At Wags Animal Hospital, we understand how fireworks can affect your furry friends and want to help you keep them safe and calm. With the right preparation and a little extra care, you can reduce your pet’s anxiety and make the holiday easier for everyone.
Why Are Fireworks So Hard on Pets?
Cats and dogs have acute hearing and are sensitive to loud noises, even ones that are far away. What may sound distant to you can result in a strong, instinctual response in your pet — one that says danger. The booming sound of fireworks is unnatural to them and can even be physically felt. Many pets instinctively try to hide or escape from these startling noises, leading to anxiety or even aggression. In some cases, anxiety can be redirected as aggression, not out of intent, but because their systems are in extreme override. Watch out for signs like hiding, shaking, dilated pupils, and hypersalivation.
Create a Safe Room for Them on the 4th
If you’re going out to enjoy the fireworks, keep your pets at home, safe and secure. While you may find fireworks exhilarating, most pets don’t. To relieve anxiety for them:
✔ Create a safe space with an unlocked crate covered in noise-muffling blankets, or a cozy corner with their favorite bedding, blankets, and toys.
✔ Close windows and curtains to reduce visual and audio stimuli.
✔ Distract them with some of their favorite activities and treats.
✔ Play soft music, white noise, or leave the TV on.
✔ Try anxiety vests — some pets respond well to this extra sense of comfort.
If You’re Entertaining at Home
If you’re having guests on the 4th, these tips can help:
✔ Give your pets dinner early, before the noise begins.
✔ Take dogs on a long walk before the fireworks start and let them relieve themselves fully.
✔ If you’re entertaining guests, put your fur babies in a ‘safe room’ so they can’t escape as guests come in & out as they desire.
If they do escape, they may be disoriented or lost. Make sure that they’re microchipped and that your information is up to date in the registry. We can help with this! The implantation of a microchip is typically done fairly quickly and can be performed during a regular in-room visit. The vast majority of pets don’t seem to mind this quick procedure.
If needed, call us to request sedatives. The medications we use have a wide margin of safety. Don’t wait for the last second! We recommend trying the medications before the “day of”. This way, you have the opportunity to assess and adjust the desired dose based on how it affects your pet.
Long-Term Solutions for Noise-Related Anxiety
Supplements and medications – For pets with extreme anxiety, we can suggest products or supplements, or prescribe medications. Note that most supplements can take 2-3 months to take full effect. Starting them now may not be as effective for this year’s action.
Noise exposure therapy – Do the 100-day challenge! Take your dog (or cat, if they are leash trained) to a new place every day for 100 days. Spend some time there (at least an hour) and expose them to the new sounds and smells around. Examples for good places to expose your pet include Home Depot, Publix, playgrounds, nursing homes, the farmer’s market, or a local soccer game. Depending on your pet, ensure that you gradually build up to the location based on their level of anxiety.

You Are Their Comfort Zone
Your pets are taking cues from you. Stay calm and create a peaceful environment. Hang out with them in their safe room, offer comfort and reassurance, reward positive behavior, and avoid scolding or showing impatience. You are their greatest source of support.
